FURTHER CONSULTATION TO BE HELD ON THE WINGETS

Keystone Tenant Managed Homes and GHA are to enter into further consultation with the local community, Glasgow City Council (GCC) and Communities Scotland over the future of the Winget houses in Carntyne.

GHA's Investment and Regeneration Committee last week considered a report from independent consultants Hilland Ritchie on the technical and financial implications of addressing the problems with the Wingets.
The report identified three options:

  • To repair the defective properties
  • To demolish the properties and build new homes
  • A mixture of repair and new build.

All three options were deemed viable with Hilland Ritchie recommending that two pilot repair projects be undertaken to validate cost and determine the future life expectancy and subsequent mortgageability of the properties.

Subject to the successful completion of the retention pilots, the report proposes the best option is the mixture of repair and new build.

The Investment and Regeneration Committee approved in principle the implementation of one or two of the retention pilots subject to consultation with GCC and Communities Scotland on the availability of grants for owners.

Committee members also approved a full geotechnical site investigation for the Carntyne area along with the development of a holding investment strategy for the Wingets.

Keystone Tenant Managed Homes Community Housing Manager, Margaret Crawley, said:

"We commissioned Hilland Ritchie to produce a report into the future of the Wingets because we recognised that the problems faced by many of the homes were, and still are, getting progressively worse.

"The report made a number of recommendations on the best ways forward for the local community, while making it clear that there will have to be further consultation with the key stakeholders involved.

"We now have to look at engaging with the local community, Communities Scotland and Glasgow City Council to address a number of key issues including the availability of grants for owners in the area.

"On this basis we will be holding two information days later this month to update the local community on our progress. We are committed to delivering for the people of Carntyne but can only do that with the cooperation of all concerned."
