The Carntyne Community

There are 986 Winget houses in Carntyne, with the majority (680) owned by GHA. However, more than 30 per cent (306) of the houses have been bought through the Right To Buy (RTB) scheme and include a small number of private landlords. The houses are mainly four-in-a-block or semi-detached with the pattern of owenership completely mixed. Given the high percentage of owners living in the area it is clear that any forthcoming solution must satisfy both tenants and owners.

Despite the problems faced by many of the Wingets, Carntyne remains a popular area, highlighted by the results of the independent social survey carried out by Hilland Ritchie published in November 2004. Key findings of the social survey include:

  • Carntyne is a nice, quiet area
  • There is a strong community spirit
  • It is a sought after area with stable population
  • There is a high proportion of elderly and retired residents
"We recognise that Carntyne is a a popular place to live and we are committed to finding a solution that ensures it stays that way.

"We want to see local people continue to live in the area and any further decisions made on the future of the Wingets will only be taken after consultation with tenants and residents."
