Metrics that Matter
The size of your database and process metrics like open rates, bounce rates and response rates are nice to know. However, you have to focus on the metrics that really matter to your company. Traditional marketing was measured in response rates. Modern marketing is measured in profit.
When you consider the lifetime value of each of your new clients, taking into account your retention rate, how much is each campaign worth to your business over the next 3 years?

Increase your retention rate by keeping in touch with your clients every month. I wrote in Scotland on Sunday recently that the main reason customers don't come back to you is because of perceived indifference. The customers simply weren't invited to come back. The fastest and most cost-effective way of getting in touch with your database is by email.
