The Theory Test

The good news is you do not have to pass the theory test before you can begin driving lessons.

The Theory Test has been developed to focus new drivers on knowing how to be safe on the roads. The test is a series of multiple choice questions that test the students ability to identify hazards on the road and how to avoid them.

You will have 40 minutes to answer 35 test questions. The pass mark is 30 correct answers.

Taking the driving theory test couldn’t be simpler. You select your answers by touching the computer screen. This touchscreen system has been carefully designed to make sure it is easy to use.

The theory test will cost £21. You must bring along your provisional driving licence and some other acceptable proof of identity that bears your name, photograph and signature.

Candidates can work through a practice session lasting up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before starting their actual test. Staff at the test centres will be on hand to help candidates who have any difficulties in using the new system.

The screens are easy to read. Only one question will appear on the screen at one time, and candidates will be able to move backwards and forwards through the questions. Candidates will also be able to go back to any questions which they want to look at again, and it will be easy to change any answers. The system will also alert candidates if they have not completely answered a question.

The test questions will not change in any way. Candidates will have 40 minutes to answer 35 test questions. The pass mark is 30 correct answers.

All candidates should receive their test results before they leave the test centre.

Apply for your theory test as soon as you start your driving lessons so that you have the date to work towards. You can't apply for your practical test until you've passed the theory so it'll hold up the whole process if you wait too long.

Hazard Perception

Since 14 November 2002 the theory test has included a hazard perception test which comprises a selection of film clips showing real road scenes and potential hazards.

You will be assessed on how soon you spot the developing hazards. This test forms part of the current multiple choice theory test. You must pass both elements to pass your test. If you fail either the multiple choice section or the Hazard Perception test you will fail the whole test.

To book a test phone 0870 010 1372 between 8am and 6pm weekdays or use the DSA online booking service

The Practical Driving Test

Even if you have not quite turned seventeen we are happy to advise you of what's involved ahead to help you get your driving licence as soon as your able.

"If you can manage it, try and take at least two 2-hour lessons a week"

Once you've decided to learn to drive, you want to make sure that you reach test standard as quickly as possible and without taking more lessons than you need.

Take regular driving lessons whilst learning the theory. This means your instructor can answer any questions about the theory and also help set it in the context of real driving.

If you can manage it, try and take at least two 2-hour lessons a week.

Make sure you wear really comfortable clothes on the day of the test and go to the loo before you set out

And remember the examiner is only human (honestly!)

Most importantly... Good luck!

The practical test will cost £48.50. You may be able to have your test in the evening or on Saturday but the cost is increased to £58. A test date and time will be given, which may be changed if its unsuitable. You must give a least 14 working days notice to cancel your test.

"During your lessons you will be taught what to expect in the test"

The Practical Driving Test usually lasts about 45 minutes and will be taken at your local driving test centre by a DSA examiner. You can use our car so you are fully familiar with the controls as candidates need to be as confident and relaxed as possible during the examination. During your lessons you will be taught what to expect in the test. The examiner will inform you whether you've passed or not after the test, should you fail you will be told what you did wrong. You can re-apply for another test straight away, but you must wait at least 10 working days before your next test. Your lessons will prepare you for your practical driving test. If you pass and have a photo card licence issued after 1st March 2004, the examiner can offer to have your full licence issued to you automatically. There is no fee and your full licence will arrive by post within 3 weeks.
